Naming
We were in charge of naming and designing the logo for a tempura restaurant that opened in the basement of the Waikiki Shopping Plaza in 2023.
In Japanese, “ki” (喜) means “joy.” The name “Kiki” was chosen to express the excitement and happiness of eating delicious tempura. Also, it plays on the word “kiki” in “Waikiki,” where the restaurant is located.
Logo design
The logo was designed as a combination of a diamond-shaped symbol and text. Depending on the situation, the symbol and logotype can be arranged horizontally, vertically, or used separately.
Symbol
The symbol is designed after freshly fried shrimp tempura. The wave-like pattern is also reminiscent of the waves in Waikiki. In addition, the diamond shape is an image of Diamond Head, a landmark in Waikiki.
Logotype
We chose elegant brush script that is neither too extravagant nor too delicate, and doesn’t give off a cheap feel. The kanji for “Kiki” was designed in a stamp-like style to allow for a natural display in both English and Japanese. Also, if you look closely at the “々” part, you can see a small playful touch—a hidden silhouette of shrimp tempura.
